Psychological Effects of Earthquake

ÖZET

The section measures the psychological impact of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes on the Turkish society. For this purpose, three common psychological reactions to traumatic events are analyzed through the Impact of Events Scale, which was also widely used in Turkey after the Marmara earthquake. The chapter begins with an introduction by Prof. Nebi Sümer from Sabancı University on “Common Psychological Reactions after Disasters”:

  • I tried not to think about my feelings and thoughts about the earthquake.
  • I tried to put the earthquake out of my mind.
  • I felt alert and on my toes.
  • I had difficulty concentrating.
  • Even though I didn't want to, it came to my mind and I had to think about the earthquake.
  • Even unrelated things made me think about the earthquake.
